How to make New Year’s resolutions stick

Successful New Year’s Resolutions

Many of us make New Year’s resolutions, only to find that we’ve let things slip by the middle of January.

But here are some simple steps you can take to drastically improve your chances of success:

Set realistic and achievable goals

Instead of making vague resolutions, define specific ones which can be measured. Don’t just say “exercise more” — set a goal such as: “Exercise for 30 minutes, three times a week.”

Make a plan

Now decide how you’re going to fulfil those goals. In the example above, that might be: “Football on Monday, run on Wednesday, gym on Friday.” If you’ve set big goals, break them down into smaller ones with clearly defined steps.

Be accountable

Share your resolutions with others, so they can support you (and you won’t want to fail). Even better, rope a friend in to do them with you. You’ll be more likely to go for a run in the rain if you’ve committed to do it with someone else.

Celebrate milestones

Recognise and reward yourself for reaching milestones along the way. This will reinforce positive habits and motivate you to continue working towards your goals.

Learn from setbacks

Understand that setbacks are part of any journey. Instead of thinking you’ve failed, see them as a chance to learn and adjust your approach. Think about what went wrong, make adjustments and continue moving forward.

Consider your ‘why’

Think about the reasons you want to make changes. Whether it’s looking and feeling better, being able to play with the kids or a specific health concern — keeping it in mind can bring motivation when you need it most.
